Youth Programming

/ / Youth Programming

There are many youth programs in the neighborhood, and Lawrenceville United continues to support several of them.

Lawrenceville Summer Celebration Day Camp

In previous years, Lawrenceville United coordinated a summer camp for local youth. Since 2014, LU has partnered with the Estelle S. Campbell Boys and Girls Club to support their summer camp and continue to offer a camp that’s local and accessible to children in Lawrenceville. Each year the program seems to grow in popularity and in programming. In 2016, over 100 kids between the ages of 4 and 12 attended camp each week over 8 weeks. Some of the programs included visits with community groups like the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, Bike Pittsburgh, and the Pittsburgh Police; weekly field trips to places like Frick Park, the Carnegie Science Center, the Zoo, Phipps Conservatory, and a Pittsburgh Pirates day game; weekly trips to North Park pool for swimming; interacting with Lawrenceville favorites like the Organic Community Garden, the Allegheny Cemetery, and Arsenal Lanes; and much more. LU supports the summer camp through arranging field trips and programming, providing need-based scholarships, recruiting/communication, and the end-of-summer-camp cookout. For more information, please contact the Estelle S. Campbell Boys and Girls Club at (412) 682-4013.

Youth tennis clinics

Since 2014, LU has partnered with CitiParks Tennis to offer youth tennis clinics for students at Arsenal Elementary and Woolslair Elementary, as well as open clinics to the community. Community clinics are typically every Thursday at 7 PM for ages 6-10 and for beginners and intermediates. The drop-in community clinics are $10 per session and taught in a play-to-learn style with all equipment provided. During the winter months, the clinics are held at Arsenal Middle, and during the summer months at the courts at Arsenal Park. For more information, contact LU at (412) 802-7220.

Swim lessons

LU has also worked with Arsenal Middle School and Thelma Lovette YMCA to support community swim lessons at the pool at Arsenal Middle School. Classes are typically held once per semester after school hours for ages 6 months and up. LU also tries to support free and open community swim nights at the pool each year. For more information, please contact LU at (412) 802-7220.
