Bio for Kristopher (Kit) D. Durrett

Name: Kristopher (Kit) D. Durrett

What years have you lived in Lawrenceville? 1 year

Why did you move to Lawrenceville? My wife and I really enjoy how walkable the community is and the proximity to so many wonderful and amazing shops and restaurants.

Current Job Title (if employed): Physician Assistant

Why do you want to be on the LU Board: I want to help make a difference in the Lawrenceville community by working to make it an inclusive place where everyone feels welcome but still working to keep the history and tradition that makes it special.

Please list Volunteer, Non-Profit, or Board Experience: I worked at a local non-profit called Circle C Youth and Families Service, for almost 3 years. At Circle C, I worked with youth transitioning out of the foster care system by teaching them life skills. I also worked at the YMCA and managed an after-school program and their school program. I have participated in numerous volunteer activities through Pittsburgh Cares. I have also interned at the Mount Washington Community Development Corporation.

What makes Lawrenceville unique? Why? Lawrenceville is unique because of its history and its community involvement from both older and newer residents. The amazing shops, restaurants and bars also make it a special place to live. My wife and I enjoy our evening walks, with our two dogs, up and down Butler Street. We enjoy the beautiful trees and flowers, and the feel of the neighborhood.

What is one thing you would like to work on within the neighborhood? Why? I would like to make Lawrenceville an even more pedestrian and bike friendly neighborhood. This would include encouraging neighbors to help make Lawrenceville as green as possible to improve air quality and decrease litter throughout the neighborhood to make it a healthier and safer place to live.

How are you involved in the Lawrenceville community? I regularly attend LU meetings and have participated in volunteer activities with LU; such as the Garbage Olympics. I also volunteered for Pittsburgh’s Snow Angels by helping to shovel snow for local neighbors. My wife and I regularly attend the Lawrenceville Farmer’s Market and participate in the social activities they hold.

What would you bring to the LU Board (e.g. experience, skills, perspective, network, etc.)? I currently work as a Physician Assistant at a private psychiatric practice. My past experience has been with non-profit organizations helping underserved youth and low-income communities. My professional career has been dedicated to helping others and I believe my relationship building, empathy, and active listening skills will serve me well as a LU Board member. My critical thinking and problem-solving skills I’ve learned on the job and through my Master’s Program (SRU) will also aid me as a board member.

Whether I am a board member or not, I am dedicated to helping the Lawrenceville community grow while maintaining what makes it special, i.e., the people, the natural resources, and local businesses. I’m really proud to be a part of the community.

What is one fun fact that others might be surprised to know about you? I enjoy baking different sour dough recipes; sour dough bread, sour dough pizza, sour dough pancakes, sour dough muffins, etc.
